In the small town of Riedlingen, Germany, a solemn memorial service was held on Friday, 1st August, to remember the lives lost and those affected by the tragic derailment of a Regional Express train on July 27, 2025.

The ecumenical memorial service was hosted by the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart and the Evangelical Church in Württemberg, with Klaus Krämer, Bishop of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, and Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl, Bishop of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg, co-officiating the service. The memorial service began at 11:00 AM and was broadcast live by SWR television.

Richard Lutz, CEO of Deutsche Bahn AG, Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder (CDU), Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg Winfried Kretschmann, and Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann (both Greens) were among the dignitaries who attended the memorial service.

The train accident, which resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries, occurred in Riedlingen due to a landslide caused by torrential rains. Experts are still investigating the exact cause of the derailment. Recovery work for the derailed train was completed on Wednesday, and the fourth and final carriage was lifted out of the track area.

The memorial service took place at the Church of Our Lady in Zwiefalten, Reutlingen district. The condition of the sleepers and rails has been checked since the morning, and experts are inspecting the track for any damage. Once the inspection is complete, plans will be made for repairs and the reopening of train services.

The carriage that was derailed is expected to be pulled away from the accident site on either Thursday or Friday. The memorial service served as a reminder of the tragic event and a way for the community to come together in support of those affected.
