Provincial Liberals hold a positive sentiment towards Karina Gould, displaying enthusiasm for her potential leadership role within the party.
In the political landscape of Ontario, a new contender has emerged as the favourite to lead the Ontario Liberal Party. According to the latest data from Queen's Park Briefing, a membership-based information source covering political and legislative movements at the provincial level, Karina Gould is preferred by a significant margin over current leader Bonnie Crombie.
Gould, a Canadian politico hailing from Ontario, has been making waves since her election win in 2015. She defeated Mike Wallace for the Burlington federal seat and has been the MP ever since. Her political career has seen her rise through the ranks, currently serving as Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance.
The recent federal leadership race saw Gould run against Mark Carney, but she was soundly trounced. However, this setback seems to have done little to dampen her political aspirations, as she now sets her sights on the Ontario Liberal Party leadership.
The upcoming membership meeting in September is expected to potentially include a ballot question about holding a leadership convention or keeping Crombie as the leader. If a ballot question were held, Gould would be preferred by 54% of voters, compared to Crombie's 46%.
Crombie, however, is not without support. She is tied with Andrew Boozary and John Fraser in voter preference, according to the same data. Other contenders in the race, such as Nate Erskine-Smith, Marco Menicino, Mohamad Fakih, and Navdeep Bains, are not preferred over Crombie by a significant margin.
Interestingly, Gould's rise in the Ontario Liberal Party has been met with silence from Gazette readers and Gould herself regarding the upcoming leadership meeting. Meanwhile, the Ontario Liberal Party seems to be excited about Gould, with close confidante Eleanor McMahon, a former MPP for Burlington, lending her support.
Despite Gould's potential leadership, it's worth noting that she was not made a member of the Carney Cabinet once he was elected Prime Minister. This could be seen as a setback, but Gould has remained undeterred, focusing instead on her role in the House of Commons and her bid for the Ontario Liberal Party leadership.
As the September membership meeting approaches, the race for the Ontario Liberal Party leadership is heating up. With Gould's popularity on the rise, it will be interesting to see how the party's decision unfolds. Congratulations were extended to Gould on her 2015 election win by none other than Mike Wallace, a testament to the respect she has earned in Canadian politics.
