News Article: Truck Toll Extension Puts Pressure on Bergisch Companies, Particularly Craft Enterprises

A motion has been introduced in the Bundestag by the CDU/CSU parliamentary group this week, aiming to alleviate the burden on small businesses, specifically craft enterprises, in Solingen, Remscheid, and Wuppertal II. The concern stems from the extension of the truck toll, which is set to take effect as of July 1st, and will apply to vehicles with a technically permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tons.

Jürgen Hardt, a Federal MP from the aforementioned districts, has expressed his concern about not overburdening small businesses like craft enterprises. He believes that the demand for many more commercial activities to be exempt from the toll is justified, especially those carried out in a craft-like manner and connected with transport tasks.

However, the current exemption for craftsmen does not cover a wide enough range of commercial activities. This includes non-agricultural gardening, the pre- or post-processing sector of agriculture, the civic engagement of food banks, janitorial services, energy supply, waste disposal, exhibition stand construction, and other comparable activities.

The majority of small and medium-sized enterprises affected by toll obligations in these districts, which are not covered by the exemption for craftsmen, are primarily engaged in non-handicraft professions that operate vehicles with a technically permissible total weight of 7.5 tons or more.

The Bergisch companies argue for equal treatment, stating that all commercial activities that are carried out in a craft-like manner and are connected with transport tasks should be exempt from the toll. They claim that the truck toll extension is adding unnecessary financial strain to their businesses and is an added burden during these difficult economic times.

The traffic light coalition's decision to include commercial goods traffic over 3.5 tons in the truck toll is putting pressure on many Bergisch companies. The toll obligation extension is expected to put a strain on small businesses, particularly craft enterprises, and is seen as worsening the economic situation of these companies.

The demand for more exemptions from the toll is aimed at reducing the financial strain on a broader range of small businesses. The hope is that this will alleviate the burden and help these companies navigate the challenging economic landscape.
