Time of Day Matters: Save Up to 13 Cents on Fuel in the Evening Instead of the Morning

The fueling script goes like this: Start your engine later in the day. Prices start to climb steeply around 6:00 AM, peaking just after 7:00 AM during rush hour. At that time, diesel is, on average, 9 cents pricier than the daily average, with Super E10 at 8 cents more. However, prices dive sharply by 9:00 AM, hovering just 2 cents above the daily average before ticking up slightly and then bouncing around until the evening low. Around midday, you're already paying about 2 cents less than the daily average, and about 4 to 5 cents less in the evening, with the lowest point just before 8:00 PM being fractionally cheaper than the rest of the day. After 10:00 PM, prices creep back up, remaining fairly steady overnight until another steep climb the next morning.
ADAC spotted eight typical price peaks throughout the day, matching last year's record level. Individual gas stations may have many more, but the ADAC's analysis focuses on average values. At the start of this year, the Federal Cartel Office reported an average of 22 price changes per gas station, with some stations experiencing over 50 changes in a day! So even though you might miss the absolute lowest price at night, the odds are pretty good.
