Potentia Energy's 500MW Tallawang Solar-Plus-Storage Project Approved

Potentia Energy's 500MW Tallawang solar-plus-storage project management has received planning approval from the NSW Independent Planning Commission. The AU$1.3 billion project, located in the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), is set to create hundreds of jobs and contribute significantly to Australia's renewable energy targets.

The Tallawang project, situated 8km north-west of Gulgong, combines a 500MW solar PV power plant with a 500MW/1000MWh battery energy storage system. This hybrid configuration addresses grid stability challenges and maximises renewable energy output. The project's 1,000MWh storage capacity will provide critical grid services, including frequency regulation and voltage support.

Securing access rights in May 2025 as part of the Central-West Orana REZ, the project aligns with Australia's climate goals. Potentia Energy CEO Werther Esposito emphasised the importance of Australia's REZs in achieving these targets. The REZ aims to generate 4.5GW of renewable energy power capacity in its first stage, spanning 20,000 square kilometres across Dubbo, Dunedoo, and Mudgee. During construction, the project will create approximately 380 full-time equivalent jobs, with a peak workforce of 420 onsite workers. Once operational, it will maintain 10 full-time positions.

The Tallawang project, with its significant investment and job creation, underscores the potential of Australia's REZs in driving renewable energy development. With planning approval secured, Potentia Energy is poised to make a substantial contribution to the nation's clean energy transition.
