For Robert Francis Prevost, the newly crowned Pope Leo XIV, there was no other choice in the conclave. He holds a vision for the Catholic Church's response to poverty, climate crisis, and social injustice - a beacon against Trumpism.
"Trump is no longer the most influential American in the world," states Robert Francis Prevost. It's as plain as day in the "New York Times" headline. Pope Leo XIV has already gained the support of Trump critics - standing as a complete 180-degree turn from the US president.
Who is this 69-year-old Augustinian monk? Born in Chicago's Steel City, educated at an Augustinian college in the tiny town of Holland, Michigan, followed by a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Philosophy at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, then joining the Augustinian order. After studies in Saint Louis and a doctorate in Canonical Law, Prevost spent 15 years as a missionary among the impoverished in Peru, serviced as a bishop in the Peruvian city of Chiclayo, and fulfilled a 12-year tenure as the prior of the entire Augustinian order. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed him to the office for the selection of new bishops.
A Prime Example: Home to Many, Speaks Five Languages - Pope Leo XIV - An American PontiffA life's work in a nutshell. A man dedicated to providing concrete aid for Third World poverty victims. A proven leader, able to influence, advise, listen, rather than command. A long-time advocate for addressing human-induced climate change. As the marginalized are set to bear the brunt of the impending crisis first, followed by the rest of mankind.
No Alternative in the Conclave
Enrichment Insights into the Conclave: Reports from Cardinals suggest that the election in the conclave was a foregone conclusion for Prevost. There were no real challengers. An African Cardinal, who casually commented that there were no problems with homosexuality in Africa since it simply didn't exist, had minimal chances of election. Cardinal Pietro Parolin missed his opportunity when he botched the homily on St. Peter's Square during the Holy Year of Youth with a dreary speech. Other favorites were either too reformist or too far-right.
The Holy Spirit had an easy time working for Prevost, despite some worries over appointing another religious man as Pope following Jesuit Bergoglio, the first Augustinian in Church history.
The media attention surrounding the 69-year-old elected by a gathering of 133 mostly older men from 71 countries worldwide in just 24 hours as the 269th successor to Saint Peter takes some by surprise. However, it's hardly unexpected. Pope Leo XIV is recognized by 1.4 billion people globally as their spiritual and moral compass. His opinion matters, even to non-believers or followers of other religions. How he positions himself on humanity's most pressing issues - war, peace, poverty, environment - holds significance.
No Doubt: Leo XIV - Researchers Decipher the Pope's FormulaOf course, this Pope also bears the burdens of the Catholic Church: women make up half of humanity, yet have no say in his election or the Church's governance. Pope Leo XIV will have to confront numerous instances of abuse by clergy members against those under their care, including minors, women, and men within the Church. Tens of thousands of internal Church documents on abuse cases by clerics around the world are stored in the Church's archives in the Palace of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. Victims and their families have long demanded that these archives be opened.
A New Leo
Enrichment: "Not a Carbon Copy of Francis" - Church Historian: Leo XIV Will Be a Political PopeWhat can we expect from Leo XIV's "church political program"? There is no collection of speeches yet, but key points are apparent. The most significant revelation: the name choice. Before the cardinals, Pope Leo XIV made clear his connection to Leo XIII, who served as Pope from 1878 to 1903 and developed Catholic social ethics. With his encyclical Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo XIII aimed to contain socialist ideas among workers, sharply criticizing exploitation, unfair wages, and conditions as "an injustice crying out to heaven."
Prevost explicitly referenced his namesake who dealt with the Church in the wake of the first industrial revolution and declared the defense of workers' rights, the least, to be core tasks of a socially active Church. Now, humanity faces the second industrial revolution. Artificial Intelligence could serve as a salvation, but it could also spell disaster. One thing is clear: this Pope, like his namesake, has an eminently political agenda. His Church will not retreat to the confessional, but will preach the promise of salvation here and now, even if politics advises otherwise.
Enrichment: "JD Vance is Wrong" - Leo XIV Shared Critical Articles on US PoliticsThe central pillar of his papacy is the indivisibility of humanity: there are no first and second-class people, and everyone has the same human rights to a safe life and justice. Prevost proclaims the unconditional duty of the rich and powerful to the salvation of all of humanity. Even the 18-page letter from Pope Francis to the US bishops' conference, written in February of this year, was significantly influenced by him. The mass deportations of poor migrants from the US back to Latin America are indefensible. A similarly stern rebuke was last heard in Pius XI's "With burning concern" letter to German Catholics - targeting Hitler's policies.
Pope Leo XIV reminds the rich and powerful to be humble, avoid self-congratulation, and instead, take responsibility and demonstrate compassion. A sharper political counterpoint to Trumpism is difficult to imagine. Trump may have Catholic voters, but he does not have the Church. Accusations of the Catholic bishops having enriched themselves with government funds from USAID have united the bishops, who are often divided among themselves: behind Prevost, the most revered American in the world.
