Bavaria's Grim Economic Outlook: No Light at the End of the Tunnel

Economic Outlook: Persistent Slowdown Likely Ahead - Persistent Economic Struggle Remains Unresolved

Bavaria, one of the key economic drivers in Germany, just ain't catchin' a break. The state's economy, reeling from more than three years of economic turmoil, shows no signs of recovery. The latest economic survey by the Bavarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce paints an equally dismal picture as at the start of the year. A mere 8% of companies rate their economic situation as good.

Manfred Goessl, BIHK's Managing Director, sums it up: "This downward trend doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon." Businesses' expectations for the coming months have slightly improved since the start of the year, but they're still stuck at zero—an equal number of positive and negative assessments.

No Rays of Hope on the Horizon

The BIHK economic index currently hovers at 104 points, a slight uptick from the start of the year but still below the long-term average. Every sector is currently rating their situation worse than a year ago: services, construction, retail and wholesale, industry, and tourism. There's been slight improvement only in the construction and wholesale sectors, according to the BIHK survey.

The New Government: Not Exactly a Silver Lining

The survey also reveals that businesses are casting a jaundiced eye on the new coalition government. "The economic damage is so severe that the expectations of entrepreneurs aren't through the roof," said BIHK President Klaus Josef Lutz about the work of the last two federal governments—the SPD-led traffic light coalition and its predecessor government of Union and SPD under Angela Merkel (CDU).

"Germany's economy is the world champion of uncertainty," Goessl asserts.
