In a significant move towards fiscal responsibility, the House of Representatives' budget subcommittee has decided to cut the budget for parliament complex renovations by 702 million baht. This decision comes amid political and coalition instability, with the government focusing on amnesty bills and postponing several legislative initiatives.

The cuts will affect various proposed projects, including the cancellation of four projects: the renovation of Sala Kaew (Glass Pavilion), the CB406 budget meeting room, the cabinet reception room, and landscape improvements for the parliament's organic fertiliser initiative. The 4D screening room, originally intended to be an immersive cinema for visitors, will now be a simple educational space, without 3D or 4D features.

These changes are part of a broader cost-cutting measure aimed at curbing unnecessary spending. Mr Parit Wacharasindhu, a People's Party MP, has long been a critic of the high cost and urgency of the project. He considers the decision to reduce the budget by 702 million baht a meaningful effort in this direction.

The budget to improve lighting on B1 and B2 floors, and upgrade the kitchen and banquet hall, has been reduced by half or more. The plan to purchase 19 large LED screens was cut down to only 4 screens. These cuts are estimated to save at least 338 million baht, according to Mr Parit.

Mr Parit further stated that a good parliament is one that works efficiently for the needs of the people. He believes that a truly effective parliament is measured not by its grandeur, but by its ability to deliver meaningful change. He believes that this decision shows a willingness by the House of Representatives to hold itself accountable and respond to public criticism.

The cancellation of these four projects alone will help the government save about 300 million baht. This decision was made after a meeting on Thursday, marking a step towards more prudent spending and a more accountable parliament.

  1. Despite the political instability and focus on amnesty bills, the House of Representatives' budget subcommittee decided to divert funds from parliament complex renovations to finance other crucial aspects of government, such as cost-cutting measures aimed at curbing unnecessary spending in fiscal policy.
  2. The decision to eliminate four proposed projects and reduce expenditure on lighting, kitchen, banquet hall, and LED screens in the parliament complex will save approximately 638 million baht, demonstrating a commitment to accountable and prudent business practices, as advocated by Mr Parit Wacharasindhu, a People's Party MP.
