Over seven months, a vast quantity of coal totaling 30 million metric tons was excavated.

In an interview on "Yakutia 24" on Wednesday, Maxim Tereщенko, Minister of Industry and Geology, announced that Yakutia has maintained its coal production and export levels, despite facing logistical challenges.

From January to July 2023, Yakutia produced 30 million tons of coal, representing a 2.8 million ton increase compared to the same period in 2022. Coal exports from Yakutia during this seven-month period amounted to 14.8 million tons, similar to the level of the same period in 2022.

Tereщенko, who is also the head of the republican agency, expressed optimism that the full implementation of efforts would enable Yakutia to reach its expected coal export figure by the end of the year. The coal export figure for the entire year of 2023 is expected to be at the level of 2023 and 2024.

However, logistical challenges, including port and railway line issues and extended ice conditions that limit shipping for over seven months each year, have caused disruptions and missed deliveries to Asia-Pacific buyers. As a result, the projected coal export figure for Yakutia by the end of 2024 is not explicitly stated, but it is clear that export volumes are under pressure.

Last year, Yakutia ranked second in the country in coal production, and in 2022, it ranked first in coal production in the Far East. In 2022, a total of 49.3 million tons of coal was produced in Yakutia.

By the end of 2023, it is expected that coal exports from Yakutia will reach 26.3 million tons, at the level of 2023 and 2024. No new information was provided about the total coal production in Yakutia for the first seven months of 2023.

Financial losses reported by Yakutia’s largest coal supplier, Elga, indicate significant difficulties, with losses exceeding $500 million in the first five months of 2025, suggesting continued operational and export volume challenges that likely impacted 2024 figures as well.

In the first nine months of 2024, coal rail exports overall dropped by 9.3%, with eastern routes (which include Yakutia) accounting for 61% of the 140.8 million tonnes transported. Specific export targets or projections for Yakutia for the entire 2024 year are not detailed.

In summary, while precise end-2024 export volume projections for Yakutia are not available, export volumes are constrained by severe logistical and ice-navigation issues, causing missed deliveries and lower-than-expected exports in 2024. The overall trend indicates that Yakutia’s coal export figures in 2024 were under pressure, but exact tonnage projections are not reported in the sources.
