OPG Closes Pickering Nuclear Unit 4 as Google, Amazon, Meta, and Dow Back Nuclear Expansion

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has announced the closure of Pickering Nuclear Generating Station Unit 4. Meanwhile, tech giants Google and Amazon, along with Meta and Dow, have joined forces to boost nuclear power capacity. Google has also partnered with Kairos Power to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs).

OPG's decision to shut down Pickering Unit 4 comes after 50 years of operation. The closure is part of the province's plan to transition to cleaner energy sources. The station will cease operations by the end of 2024.

In a separate development, Google has teamed up with US-based startup Kairos Power to deploy advanced SMRs. The partnership aims to install a capacity of 500 megawatts by 2035, primarily for powering data centers. The first pilot SMRs in the US are expected to be ready by 2026.

Framatome, a nuclear engineering company, will continue to provide instrumentation and control (I&C) services for Bruce Nuclear Generating Station Unit 6. This ensures the smooth operation of the unit, which is a significant source of power in Ontario.

In a significant show of support for nuclear power, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Dow have backed a goal to triple nuclear power capacity. This move highlights the growing recognition of nuclear energy's role in a low-carbon future.

The closure of Pickering Unit 4 marks a significant shift in Ontario's energy landscape. Meanwhile, the collaboration between tech giants and nuclear companies signals a promising future for nuclear power, with small modular reactors emerging as a key player in the clean energy transition.
