Effective Thursday, a two-year renovation project will begin on Elbgaustraße, a significant traffic artery in northwest Hamburg. The traffic authority has announced that the stretch towards Lurup will be converted into a one-way street through the construction zone near the Elbgaustraße S-Bahn station.
Drivers headed towards Eidelstedt will be rerouted via Farnhornweg and Schnackenburgallee, passing by the Barclays Arena and Volksparkstadion, due to the construction. Several full closures are anticipated in 2026. The work is slated for completion by the end of May 2027.
Bus services will also be affected, with lines heading towards Eidelstedter Platz/Schnelsen being rerouted during the construction period. The 1.8-kilometer section handles approximately 36,000 vehicles daily, including numerous buses that stop at the Elbgaustraße S-Bahn station.
The current two-lane road will undergo upgrades to include improved bike and pedestrian paths, as well as expanded bus stops. This expansion will necessitate the felling of 28 trees, and the Elbgaustraße will eventually serve as part of Radroute 18.
