NXP broadens its ASA-compliant product offering through the acquisition of Aviva Links
NXP Semiconductors N.V., a founding member of the Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA), has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Aviva Links for a total of US$242.5 million. This acquisition is an all-cash transaction and is expected to close in the first half of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
Aviva Links' solutions are designed to address the increasing need for highly-asymmetric camera and display networks in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems. The company's portfolio supports SerDes point-to-point (ASA-ML) and Ethernet-based connectivity (ASA-MLE) with data rates up to 16 Gbps, aligning with the ASA standard.
The ASA, formed in 2019, aims to help automakers migrate to open source, interoperable networking solutions. The standard establishes SerDes point-to-point communication and addresses the seamless migration to efficient Ethernet-based sensor connectivity. Over 150 members are part of the ASA today, representing the complete automotive ecosystem, including car manufacturers, tier-one suppliers, semiconductor vendors, cable and connector manufacturers, test tool vendors, and test houses.
Aviva Links has secured design wins at two major automotive OEMs and is sampling its devices to various OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers. Automobil manufacturers that have achieved design wins with Aviva Links include several leading OEMs, while current testing involves multiple OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers evaluating Aviva Links' devices.
The acquisition of Aviva Links by NXP Semiconductors N.V. is expected to help shift the market from proprietary links to open standard ASA SerDes connections. Meindert van den Beld, the senior vice president and general manager of in-vehicle networking at NXP Semiconductors, expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating, "Aviva Links' innovative solutions will significantly strengthen our position in the growing ADAS and IVI markets."
The addressable market for ADAS and IVI asymmetrical links is expected to grow from US$1 billion in 2024 to $2 billion in 2034. With the acquisition of Aviva Links, NXP Semiconductors is poised to capitalise on this growth and provide cutting-edge solutions to the automotive industry.
Notably, the BMW Group is the first car manufacturer to have publicly announced series production with ASA-ML this decade. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the acquisition of Aviva Links by NXP Semiconductors N.V. is a significant step towards a more connected and safer driving experience.
