Neoen Unveils First Six-Hour Battery in WA, Boosting Grid Reliability

Neoen, a global leader in renewable energy, has unveiled its first six-hour, long-duration storage asset, the Muchea battery plus, in Western Australia. This significant project, backed by the Australian government, will bolster grid stability and reliability in the region.

The Muchea battery plus, located near Perth, is being constructed in collaboration with UGL. It will have a capacity of 164 MW/905 MWh, making a substantial addition to Neoen's Australian portfolio, which now stands at 1.7 GW/5.1 GWh in operation or under construction.

The project is part of Neoen's ambitious plans to install another 10 GW by 2030, bringing its total global battery capacity to 18.4 GW. This expansion is supported by significant investment, with Neoen's total storage capacity in Western Australia reaching 724 MW/3,145 MWh, representing over AUD 1 billion ($661 million) since 2022.

Neoen has also recently connected the second stage of its Collie battery project, which, at 341 MW/1,363 MWh, is now the largest battery in operation in Australia. Remarkably, this stage commenced operations less than 15 months after construction began.

The Muchea battery plus, Neoen's first six-hour storage asset, is set to enhance grid stability and reliability in Western Australia. With continued investment and expansion, Neoen is solidifying its position as a key player in Australia's renewable energy landscape.
