Navantia's Galician shipyard receives a significant investment from Iberdrola as construction on the Baltic wind farm gets underway, amounting to a monetary figure of one million dollars.
Iberdrola and Navantia-Windar Consortium Strengthen Partnership for Windanker Offshore Wind Farm
Iberdrola's Windanker offshore wind farm, located in the German waters of the Baltic Sea, is set to become operational in 2026 with a capacity of 315 MW. This project is part of Iberdrola's larger Baltic Sea offshore wind hub, which will exceed 1,100 MW total capacity when combined with the 350 MW Wikinger and 476 MW Baltic Eagle projects 13.
The monopile foundations for Windanker, essential components for the wind turbines, have been manufactured by the Navantia Seanergies and Windar Renovables alliance at their joint facility in the Navantia Seanergies shipyard in Fene, A Coruña, Spain. Each monopile measures up to 84 meters in length, 10 meters in diameter, and weighs as much as 2,100 tonnes 135.
The production of these foundations has resulted in over 1,000 million euros in orders for the Navantia-Windar consortium over the last ten years, creating around 300 jobs and prompting a €36 million investment to modernize the Fene shipyard. This investment has facilitated upgrades like facilities for bending thick steel plates, new painting booths, expanded storage, and advanced manufacturing equipment 13.
The Windanker wind farm will deploy next-generation turbines with unit capacities of approximately 15 MW, increasing efficiency and project viability within Iberdrola’s Baltic Sea renewable energy strategy. The strategic collaboration has provided the Navantia-Windar consortium with stability and certainty to build a factory for these types of pieces in the Navantia Sener shipyard in Fene, reinforcing Iberdrola’s leadership in offshore wind and supporting local industry in Spain 14.
Iberdrola's offshore wind strategy has previously included projects in the UK, Germany, France, and the US. The Windanker project marks the second contract between Iberdrola and the Navantia-Windar alliance, following the East Anglia THREE project in the UK 13.
- The renewable energy sector, particularly offshore wind, is a growing area of investment for finance and business, evident in Iberdrola's Baltic Sea offshore wind hub.
- The Navantia-Windar Consortium, a key player in the industry, has secured significant orders worth over 1,000 million euros from Iberdrola over the last decade, enabling the creation of around 300 jobs and facilitating a €36 million investment in real-estate.
- The Windanker offshore wind farm, a part of Iberdrola's larger renewable energy strategy, will utilize next-generation turbines, contributing to the expansion of the offshore wind industry.
- The strategic partnership between Iberdrola and the Navantia-Windar Consortium has extended beyond the Windanker project, with the consortium planning to build a factory for manufacturing turbine components in Spain, supporting local industry and emphasizing Iberdrola's commitment to offshore wind expansion.
