Nation devises comprehensive blueprint for energy retention
In response to the April blackout, Portugal's Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, has announced a comprehensive national electricity storage plan. The plan, set to be presented on July 28, 2025, aims to enhance energy security and system resilience [1].
The plan focuses on two key areas: storage and power grid control systems. In terms of storage, the government intends to increase capacity through both chemical storage (using batteries) and hydroelectric storage (utilising existing dams) [1].
Regarding power grid control systems, the plan involves a more computerized and data-driven approach. This includes the creation of a single data collection system for better monitoring and management of the electricity grid [1].
Minister Carvalho emphasised the importance of these measures, particularly in light of the high temperatures that put increased demand on air conditioning units and require special attention in the energy sector during heat spikes. She also reassured that the national grid operators REN and E-REDES have the technical capacity to meet current challenges [1].
The announcement was made during a visit to the protection works of the Baixo Vouga Lagunar, within the scope of the Congress of the Aveiro Region. The minister also highlighted the need for all ministries related to fire prevention to maintain vigilance due to the high temperatures [1].
The plan does not appear to involve any new measures or changes in the previously announced plans. However, one of the measures to be presented is the change of power grid control systems, which will involve greater computerization and the use of data [1].
A general alert has been issued to prevent fires due to high temperatures. As the plan is still in development, no new information about the national storage plan or the change in power grid control systems was provided [1].
