Minister Berg provides a grant of 197,000 euros for an enhanced appearance of European Railway Stations
Saarbrücken, Germany - The Saarbrücken main station is set to undergo sustainable improvements in preparation for this year's German Unity Day celebrations, with the changes extending beyond the event.
The Eurobahnhof will see enhancements in the waiting area, passenger information points on the platforms, and artistic design elements, aiming to make it more attractive long-term. The working group, consisting of the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, DB InfraGO AG, and the German Railway (DB), has been identifying potential improvements at the Eurobahnhof since April.
Stefan Schwinn, head of the Regional Division Mitte of DB InfraGO AG's Business Area Passenger Stations, emphasized the close collaboration with Saarland, stating that the investments are an important signal for promoting environmentally friendly rail transport.
The Ministry of Environment will contribute approximately 197,000 euros, while the German Railway will contribute around 139,000 euros, and the federal government will contribute around 247,000 euros, totalling an investment of 583,000 euros for the Eurobahnhof.
Minister of Environment and Mobility Petra Berg visited Saarbrücken's Eurobahnhof on August 1, 2025. She explained that attractive train stations increase the willingness to use local and long-distance transport. Jennifer Sauer, head of Bahnhofsmanagement Saarbrücken, stated the intention to increase comfort and create a pleasant atmosphere at the Eurobahnhof.
The improvements are not only aimed at enhancing the appearance, waiting quality, and customer information of the main station but also at positively shaping the mobility transition in Saarland. The working group's efforts aim to encourage public transport use and reduce car dependency, supporting a broader transition towards sustainable mobility.
While specific long-term improvement plans for the Saarbrücken Eurobahnhof and their impact on the mobility transition in Saarland are yet to be detailed, consulting official sources such as Saarland's Ministry of Transport, local government planning documents, or transport operators’ strategic plans would provide more authoritative information.
