Miller Family Acquires 40% Stake in Utah Royals and Real Salt Lake for $580M

The Miller family has acquired a significant stake in the Utah Royals and Real Salt Lake teams, with a recent transaction valued at $580 million. The deal, finalised in April, sees the family take a 40% share in both the NWSL and MLS franchises.

The Miller family, led by Gail Miller, purchased the stakes for an enterprise value of $580 million. This includes $480 million for Real Salt Lake, marking the first MLS team sale since David Blitzer bought RSL in early 2022. Blitzer, who previously owned a majority stake, sold down to just over 20% in the Miller deal and will remain as the alternate governor for the MLS team.

The Utah Royals were valued at $100 million in their recent sale, a figure 50 times the expansion fee for the team, which began play in 2024. Arctos Partners, another significant shareholder, sold a portion of its stake, reducing it to the single digits but remaining the third-largest shareholder. Meanwhile, Ryan Smith sold his entire stake in the teams after declining his right of first refusal last year. The Miller family could not be immediately reached for comment.

The Miller family's acquisition of the Utah Royals and Real Salt Lake teams comes at a time when both franchises are facing challenges on the field. The Utah Royals have struggled this season, with only one win in their first 13 games, while Real Salt Lake sits 12th in MLS' 15-team Western Conference. Despite these challenges, the Miller family's investment signals a commitment to the long-term success of both teams.
