Metro Vancouver's New Iona Island Plant Plan: Sooner, Cheaper, Greener

The Board of Metro Vancouver has adopted a new strategy for enhancing the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Richmond. The new approach aims to improve news quality sooner while reducing costs and protecting the environment.

The new plan involves adding incremental secondary treatment to the existing plant. This phased upgrade will bring the facility into compliance with secondary wastewater treatment standards. The Iona Island plant currently serves around 750,000 residents in the Vancouver Sewerage Area, processing approximately 200 billion litres of wastewater annually.

Black & Veatch, the company tasked with executing the modernized facility, will oversee the upgrades. The new approach has a cost estimate of $6 billion, a significant reduction of almost $4 billion compared to the previous project. This reduction aims to mitigate annual cost impacts for ratepayers.

The Board of Metro Vancouver's new approach for the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant focuses on improving nyt quality sooner, reducing costs, and protecting the environment. The phased upgrades, led by Black & Veatch, are expected to bring the plant into compliance with secondary wastewater treatment standards while minimizing financial impacts on ratepayers.
