Maramureș Airport in Romania seeks financial support to establish a solar energy plant
Maramureș International Airport to Install 2.5 MW Solar Park and Battery Storage System
Maramureș International Airport in northern Romania has announced plans to install a renewable energy project aimed at meeting its full electricity needs. The project, expected to cost approximately 61 million Romanian lei (around 12 million euros), is set to be completed by the end of 2026.
The project involves the construction of a 2.5 MW photovoltaic (solar) park paired with an integrated battery storage system. The solar park will consist of 5,943 panels, each with a capacity of 430 watts. To support the system, 25 inverters of 100 kW each will be mounted on the support structure.
One unique feature of the project is the Carport-style solar panel installation, which will also provide 300 covered parking spaces for the airport's passengers and staff. This innovative design combines functionality with sustainability, making it a perfect fit for the modern airport.
The official application for this project was filed on July 14, 2025. The project's announcement marks a significant step forward in Maramureș International Airport's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing renewable energy sources.
With this project, Maramureș International Airport joins the growing list of airports around the world investing in renewable energy solutions. As global awareness of climate change continues to rise, it is expected that more airports will follow suit, making air travel a more sustainable and environmentally friendly experience for all.
