Kansas City Streetcar Main Street Extension Opens with Transit-Only Lanes

The Kansas City Streetcar Main Street Extension, a generational investment according to KC Streetcar Authority Executive Director Tom Gerend, is set to open. The focus of the project has been on the reliability and dependability of the service, with over 60% of the route now featuring transit-only lanes.

The transit-only lanes, designed for KC Streetcars and RideKC buses, run along Main Street between Pershing Road and 51st Street. These lanes are physically separated from general traffic by medians and curbs, or visually marked with red concrete or solid white-red-white pavement markings. Transition zones are marked with red “piano key” patterns indicating mixed-use lanes and dashed lines that allow vehicles to enter the lane briefly for right turns into businesses, intersections, or on-street parking.

City Ordinance 250275, passed on April 17, 2025, states that motor vehicles cannot operate or park in designated transit-only lanes except for specific reasons. Violations of this ordinance incur a fine of at least $50, and the vehicle may be towed at the owner's expense. However, there will be an educational period before enforcement by the Kansas City Police Department begins.

Mayor Quinton Lucas stated that the Kansas City Streetcar has served over 15 million passenger trips since 2016. The new transit-only lanes are designed to create faster rides for commuters, providing more predictability and a higher quality of service for all riders, not just for the Main Street section, but the entire alignment.

The full Main Street Extension corridor was fully resurfaced with new pavement and striping from Pershing Road to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard as part of the project. The service aims to boost streetcar ridership and improve commuter convenience, especially for those traveling between the river and the University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC) campus.

These transit-only lanes are similar to red bus-only lanes in other parts of the city. The transit-only lanes are a significant step towards creating a more efficient and reliable public transportation system in Kansas City.
