Los Angeles Police Shootings Surge in 2025 Despite Criticism of Commissioner Erroll Southers
Los Angeles has seen a surge in police shootings this year, with at least 31 incidents in the first nine months of 2025, surpassing the total for the whole of 2024. Despite facing scrutiny over his past counterterrorism studies in Israel and an increase in shootings during his tenure, Erroll Southers will continue as a member of the Los Angeles Police Commission.
Southers, who has been serving as an interim member since 2023, was nominated by Mayor Karen Bass in August. However, his appointment vote was delayed and never scheduled by the City Council. Despite this, Mayor Eric Garcetti, the official who planned to approve Southers' nomination, has allowed him to retain his position.
Southers' past work in Israel has drawn criticism, particularly in light of the ongoing crisis in Gaza. He has also faced calls for resignation after clearing pro-Palestinian protesters from USC's campus last year. Critics have pointed to an increase in police shootings during his time on the commission.
Southers, who helped lead the search for the next LAPD chief, can now serve a full five-year term due to his interim status. His continuation on the commission comes amidst controversy and a significant rise in police shootings in Los Angeles.
