Public transportation integrates autonomous vehicles for experimental purposes - Local Traffic Testing Autonomous Vehicles in Trial Run

Autonomous vehicles are poised to revolutionize public transportation in southern Hesse, Germany, as a pilot project, "Kira," is set to transport its first passengers in Langen on Monday. This collaborative effort between the German Railway and the Rhine-Main Transport Association marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first time Level 4 automated vehicles are used with passengers on public roads in the country.

These self-driving cars, capable of speeds up to 130 km/h, will be operated within a defined area initially in Langen and Egelsbach. Passengers can book rides via the Kira app, with the service planned to operate within regular traffic. Although an on-board safety driver is present to intervene in emergencies, all driving decisions are made by the vehicle.

The project's aim is to make public transportation more attractive and flexible, particularly in less urban areas. The trial is set to run through the end of 2025, with an extension under consideration. The service is expected to expand to Darmstadt later in the year, as part of broader efforts to enhance public transportation flexibility and appeal in Germany.

The project uses six modified Nio ES8 SUVs equipped with autonomous driving systems developed by Intel-owned Mobileye, including HD maps and advanced sensors. Funding for the project comes from the Federal Ministry of Transport and additional funds from RMV, totalling approximately 2.2 million euros.

This initiative is the latest in a series of autonomous vehicle projects underway in Germany, with similar projects also being conducted in Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

  1. To ensure a smooth operation of the autonomous vehicles in the community, a policy has been implemented, focusing on safety, efficiency, and passenger convenience.
  2. As part of the broader goal to enhance public transportation, the Kira project also integrates vocational training programs for technicians, aiming to foster a skilled workforce in the science and technology sectors that support the industry of autonomous vehicles.
  3. The financial success of the Kira project, along with other autonomous vehicle initiatives in Germany, could potentially stimulate economic growth in the transportation sector and provide opportunities for innovation in related industries.
