Large-Scale Solar Venture in Arizona, Producing 300MW of Power - Box Canyon Solar Project
Box Canyon Solar Project Begins Operations, Boosting Arizona's Clean Energy Revolution
The Box Canyon Solar Project, a 300-megawatt solar project, commenced commercial operations in June 2025, marking a significant step forward in Arizona's clean energy revolution. Located in Pinal County, approximately six miles north of the Town of Florence, the project is the first facility in BrightNight and Cordelio Power's 2.5-gigawatt Arizona portfolio to become operational.
The Box Canyon Solar Project was developed by BrightNight, Cordelio Power, and the Southwest Public Power Agency (SPPA) in partnership. BrightNight's patented artificial intelligence-based platform has optimised the project's design to maximise performance and offer the highest-value project at the lowest cost.
During its construction phase, the project is expected to generate a $47 million economic effect in Pinal County, according to an analysis by Elliott Pollack and Associates. Additionally, it will create 300 American jobs related to the construction and development of the utility-scale solar project. Once operational, the Box Canyon Solar Project will generate electricity to power 77,000 homes and businesses annually.
The Box Canyon Solar Project is significant not only for its economic impact but also for its contribution to the clean energy infrastructure of the region. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs stated that the project will contribute to sustainable economic growth in rural communities. The project is also the largest renewable energy procurement in SPPA's history.
The groundbreaking for the Box Canyon Solar Project was announced in November 2023, and the project was chosen in a competitive process that began in December 2020. During the groundbreaking ceremony on November 15, the project was attended by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, BrightNight CEO Martin Hermann, SPPA President of the Board Ken Robbins, and Pinal County authorities.
BrightNight is also involved in the development of the Starfire Solar Project, which upon completion will be Kentucky's largest solar development. The Box Canyon Solar Project's success is a testament to the potential of renewable energy projects in driving local economic growth and job creation while reducing the carbon footprint.
- The Box Canyon Solar Project, located in Pinal County, partners with BrightNight's artificial intelligence platform for optimized design, contributing not only to Arizona's clean energy revolution but also to the science and finance sectors, demonstrating the integration of renewable energy into the industry.
- As part of its operational phase, the Box Canyon Solar Project will produce electricity for 77,000 homes and businesses, significantly reducing Arizona's reliance on traditional energy sources and supporting environmental-science objectives related to energy conservation.
- Beyond its energy production, the Box Canyon Solar Project will generate an estimated $47 million economic effect in Pinal County during its construction phase and create 300 jobs, fostering sustainable growth in rural communities and emphasizing the positive impact of renewable-energy projects on local finance.
