Large blaze at Spanish chemical storage facility triggers evacuation, building lockdown
Wildfire Grips Spain's Andalusia: Chemical Fire Forces 80,000 to Stay Indoors
A fiery inferno, sparked by an explosion at a chemical products warehouse in the La Red industrial estate, has left the southern Spanish city of Seville's residents chained indoors by noxious fumes.
This catastrophe unfolded in Alcalá de Guadaíra, a town near Seville in Spain's south, turning a calm day into a breathtaking scene of chaos and concerns about potential poisoning. A single casualty has been reported with burn injuries, according to reports circulating.
The first distress signals began arriving at 1:20 pm from the warehouse's management company, alerting authorities about an explosion at the site. The company took precautions by evacuating their staff, although the incident's aftermath is yet to be determined.
Authorities have voiced concern over the fire's magnitude and the burning materials' hazardous nature. To prevent panicked residents from leaving their homes, emergency alerts were sent to mobile devices within Alcalá de Guadaíra via the Es-Alert system.
Residents have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed to shield themselves from the smoke, and to put on masks. The Junta de Andalucía regional government has declared a level 1 emergency.
Firefighters from seven local stations, including neighbouring towns like Alcalá de Guadaíra, Utrera, Arahal, La Rinconada, Mairena del Alcor, and Sanlúcar la Mayor, have been rallied to combat the fire.
The facility in question has been serving the distribution and commercialization of chemical products since 1985. It spans over 11,000 square metres, with 4,500 square metres under cover, and can store up to 1,000 cubic metres of bulk liquid products, as well as over 5,000 pallets.
Though the substances currently burning at the site have yet to be identified, a thick cloud of smoke has been spotted from municipalities over 80 kilometers away, demonstrating the fire's potential havoc. Authorities are diligently working to maintain control and quell the blaze's spread.
