Lagos Shuts Roads, Waterways for Africa's First Electric Powerboat Race
The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary road closure and waterway restrictions in Victoria Island, Lagos. The move is to facilitate the hosting of Africa's first electric powerboat race, the Electric Powerboat Racing Championship (E1 series), from October 3 to October 5, 2025.
Starting from Friday, October 3, the Lekki road inward Ozumba Mbadiwe will be closed until Sunday, October 5. The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed this in an official statement. Motorists from Ajah heading to Lekki will be rerouted to make a U-turn at Lekki Junction by the pedestrian bridge. Adequate parking spaces have been arranged at nearby locations, including Fidelity Bank, Access Bank, and the Nigerian Law School premises.
In addition to the road closure, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has announced the temporary closure of multiple jetties and terminals along Five Cowries Creek from October 2 to October 5. However, the specific authority coordinating alternative traffic during the event at Lagos Inland Waterways on Victoria Island Lagoon remains unclear.
The road closure and waterway restrictions are expected to cause some inconvenience to residents and visitors in the area. However, the Lagos State Government assures that these measures are necessary to ensure the smooth hosting of the historic electric powerboat race. Motorists and waterway users are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and follow the designated alternative routes.
