Labour's Inertia Regarding Economic Growth is Disheartening, According to Alex Brummer

Remarkable, indeed, that a political party consistently advocating for the working class lacks a defined industrial strategy.

Labour's Inertia Regarding Economic Growth is Disheartening, According to Alex Brummer

Here We Go With Labour's Disappointing Performance

Let's cut the crap – Labour isn't impressing anybody. Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves hyped up change and growth but they've delivered zilch so far.

This opens the door for minor players like Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats to glory hog. Listening to Ellie Reeves, Labour's chair, defend their ten months in power is like being forced to listen to a scratchy vinyl record.

Here's a pro-tip – check out Kingston Hospital's A&E on a Friday evening if you want to see the 'improved' NHS. Claiming credit for three interest rate cuts is on par with Donald Trump's ignorance, considering it's the Bank of England that sets rates, not them.

It's disingenuous to tell pensioners and the disabled they're better off because of the triple-lock when the winter fuel allowance's been axed and the freeze on allowances means more retirees will become taxpayers.

Putting on a hard hat and visiting building sites or factories isn't an expansion policy. It's bizarre that a party supposedly for the working class has no industrial strategy.

Contrary to popular belief, Reform's NHS policies aren't a terrible mistake because Nigel Farage talks about social market insurance. It's how they do it in France, Germany, Spain, Israel, and other countries that generally provide better healthcare.

Neglecting social care, a top Lib Dem priority, for another decade should never be an option. An automatic enrolment funding model would be the ideal way to ease pressure on A&E and hospital wards.

The real gem is the lack of action on growth. Wearing a hard hat and touring building sites or factories isn't a growth strategy, it's just window dressing. It's mind-boggling a party speaking about working folks still lacks an industrial strategy.

Labour's Postal Sell-Out: Against the Public Interest

Labour's support for privatizing the postal service contradicts the public interest.

Alex Brummer: Net Zero zealotry means accepting the import of solar panels from China, opposing gas and coking coal – while pouring billions into blast furnaces at British Steel. Starmer and Reeves should listen to the Norwegians, who view drilling in the North Sea as increasing national wealth and creating resources for a greener future.

Housebuilding is a noble cause, but reforms won't deliver the 1.5 million homes promised in this Parliament nor drive productivity and growth. That requires a laser focus on what the UK does well. Going after Richard Gnodde, the Goldman Sachs CEO in London, for moving to Milan is short-sighted. He should pay taxes in the UK, which has given him so much, instead of chasing rainbows overseas.

Britain's wealth is its intellectual capital. Donald Trump's attack on America's renowned research universities provides a fantastic opportunity to bring the brainpower to the UK. Instead, we chase them away. AstraZeneca's effort to bolster the UK's role as a leader in vaccines was rejected. Both it and GSK are doubling down on R&D and production in the US. If the UK wants to address its productivity problem, it needs to increase R&D spend, allowances, and training to be on par with the best in class.

Labour still has time to correct its course. But with the current clueless economic and business team in charge, don't hold your breath.

  1. Sir Keir Starmer's and Rachel Reeves's party may need to adopt policies like France, Germany, Spain, Israel, and other countries that provide better healthcare through social market insurance, as proposed by Reform UK.
  2. The lack of action on growth is concerning, as simply touring building sites or factories is not a growth strategy, but merely window dressing for a party that claims to represent the working class.
  3. Neglecting social care, a top Lib Dem priority, for another decade should be avoided, with an automatic enrolment funding model being a potential solution to ease pressure on A&E and hospital wards.
  4. It's disingenuous to claim improvements in the NHS when visiting Kingston Hospital's A&E on a Friday evening will show otherwise, and the winter fuel allowance's axing and the freeze on allowances negatively impact retirees.
  5. Labour's support for privatizing the postal service contradicts the public interest, and there's an opportunity to bring renowned research universities to Britain, as America is currently losing brainpower due to Donald Trump's attacks.
  6. To address its productivity problem, the UK needs to increase R&D spend, allowances, and training to be on par with the best in class, as AstraZeneca and GSK are doubling down on R&D and production in the US.
A party persistently emphasizing the working class, remains devoid of any comprehensive industrial plan.
