Kuwait's North Kabd Wastewater Project Moves Forward with China Deal in October
Kuwait is moving forward with its North Kabd wastewater treatment project, with a contract set to be signed with China in mid-October. The project is part of a larger collaboration between Kuwait and China, which includes several infrastructure and energy initiatives.
The North Kabd plant, to be built by Sinohydro Corporation, will have a daily treatment capacity of 1 million cubic meters of wastewater. This is a significant step for Kuwait, which has struggled with wastewater reuse due to storage and infrastructure issues, often discharging treated wastewater into the sea.
The project is part of a broader set of developments Kuwait is advancing with Chinese support. These include the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, power and water plants, renewable energy and waste recycling initiatives, and new residential areas. Kuwait has already signed several memorandums of understanding with China, including during a 2023 visit to Beijing by then-Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who later became emir. Kuwait has also formally informed Beijing about the start of contracting procedures for two energy projects.
The North Kabd wastewater treatment plant, once operational, will significantly improve Kuwait's wastewater management capabilities. Kuwait continues to work with China to sign additional project contracts, further strengthening their collaborative efforts in infrastructure development and energy.
