What kind of chickens? Suspicion triggers debate about animal welfare label - KFC Drops Brandenburg Farms Amid Animal Welfare Scandal

Animal welfare labels face scrutiny following incidents involving three chicken farms in Brandenburg. The farms, supplying meat to fast-food giant KFC, have been accused of violating animal protection laws, leading to investigations and suspensions.

KFC has ended cooperation with the farms, stating they were immediately delisted. The Tierwohl initiative, which promotes animal welfare in the food industry, has suspended the operations and initiated sanction procedures. Animal rights organization Aninova accused the farms of serious shortcomings, including overcrowding, dirt, and animal suffering.

Prosecutors are investigating the farms for suspected animal cruelty. The Public Prosecutor's Office in Neuruppin confirmed two investigations based on criminal complaints due to violations of the Animal Welfare Act. The Tierwohl initiative is reviewing possible sanctions against the operations. KFC and Plukon, another supplier, have announced consequences, including additional controls for other poultry suppliers.

Despite these incidents, chicken meat consumption in Germany continues to rise. In 2024, consumption increased by almost 4 percent year-on-year to an average of 13.6 kilograms per capita.

The recent incidents have raised questions about the effectiveness of animal welfare labels. Investigations are ongoing, and the Tierwohl initiative is reviewing possible sanctions. Meanwhile, chicken meat consumption remains high in Germany.
