Kazakhstan's Water Infrastructure Modernization: Kyzylagash Reservoir Completed
Kazakhstan is advancing its water infrastructure modernization. The head of state has directed the overhaul, with the Kyzylagash Reservoir in the Jetisu region being one of the key projects completed in 2025.
The modernization plan, specifics of which remain unclear, involves a significant expansion and improvement of the country's water infrastructure. This includes the construction of 42 new reservoirs and the reconstruction of 37 existing ones, as part of a Comprehensive Development Plan for the water sector.
The Kyzylagash Reservoir, reconstructed at a cost of €50 million, is a prime example of this effort. Its capacity has been increased to 42.6 million cubic meters, providing stable irrigation water supply to 6,680 hectares of farmland. The reservoir's reconstruction also included reinforcing the catastrophic water discharge point and building a new intake structure, protecting local residents from floods and promoting agricultural development in the region.
The modernization also involves the installation of modern control sensors, automated monitoring, and local alert systems. These upgrades aim to improve water management and efficiency, and to combat the 'black market' of water, which the government plans to intensify its fight against.
The modernization of Kazakhstan's water infrastructure is well underway, with the Kyzylagash Reservoir's reconstruction serving as a testament to the government's commitment to improving water management and promoting agricultural development. The next steps involve further expansion and improvement of the country's water infrastructure, with a focus on combating the illegal water market.
