Joachim Schmalzl Re-elected to Lead DSGV, Aims to Launch 'Wero' Payment Solution
Joachim Schmalzl has been re-elected for a third term as a member of the executive board of the Association of German Savings Banks (DSGV). He will continue his work until March 2026, bringing his extensive experience in IT, organization, and risk management from his time at Sparkasse KölnBonn.
Schmalzl is actively involved as the chairman of the supervisory board of the European Payments Initiative (EPI). During his third term, he aims to introduce the European payment solution 'Wero' to compete with PayPal and other payment providers. The launch is planned for the German e-commerce market by the end of 2025.
Schmalzl's goal for his next term is to secure digital sovereignty and expand the EPI. His experience in IT and risk management will be crucial in achieving these objectives.
