"Instructional program focusing on verifying and tracking carbon emissions"

In 2025, two important courses related to greenhouse gas emissions for organizations (ISO 14064-1 and ISO 14064-2) will be held in Singapore, offering companies an opportunity to enhance their carbon emissions reporting and verification systems.

ISO 14064-1:2018 Course

The first course, ISO 14064-1:2018, is scheduled from 27 to 29 May 2025. This course, organised by the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore, Singapore Green Building Council, and Singapore International Green Building Council, will provide 12 Professional Development Units (PDU) upon completion.

ISO 14064-2:2019 Course

The second course, ISO 14064-2:2019, is scheduled from 11 to 13 March 2025. Hosted by the National Environment Agency with the Energy Efficiency National Partnership (EENP), this course will also offer 12 PDU.

Both courses are delivered fully online and consist of 12 hours spread across 6 sessions each. The ISO 14064-2:2019 course will have additional sessions on 26-28 August 2025 and 21-23 October 2025, while the ISO 14064-3:2019 course will be held on 5-8 August 2025 and 4-7 November 2025.

Adopting ISO 14064 for Carbon Emissions Reporting and Verification

ISO 14064 provides a standardized approach to quantifying, monitoring, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Companies can use this standard to establish credible and consistent carbon inventories. The standard is divided into three parts:

  1. Part 1 specifies principles and requirements for designing GHG inventories, quantifying emissions and removals.
  2. Part 2 covers GHG project quantification, monitoring, and reporting.
  3. Part 3 addresses validation and verification of GHG assertions to ensure accuracy and reliability.

Companies can adopt these frameworks by implementing consistent measurement and data management systems for GHG emissions, conducting internal or third-party verification to validate the reported data against ISO 14064 requirements, and integrating these principles within their sustainability strategies for transparency and stakeholder confidence.

Benefits for Organizations in Singapore

Adopting ISO 14064 aligns with international sustainability and financial disclosure standards, such as those set by the ISSB, which increasingly require companies to disclose climate-related risks and emissions data based on standards like ISO 14064-1:2018. Organizations in Singapore can also benefit from training like the ISCA Sustainability Professional Certification, which includes modules on sustainability reporting frameworks, supporting capacity building in emissions measurement and assurance.

Singapore's Carbon Tax and Emissions Targets

Singapore implemented a carbon tax, the first in Southeast Asia, on 1 January 2019. The carbon tax is expected to reach S$50-80/tCO2e by 2030. Singapore's emissions are expected to peak and then reduce to around 60MtCO2e in 2030 as part of its 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). Singapore aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 as part of its Long-Term Low-Emissions Development Strategy (LEDS).
