BCO NextGen Committees Lead Milan Conference with Fresh Insights and Integration

Insights from BCO Conference, Milan: Oliver Hall's Keynote Address

Oliver Hall, national chair of the British Council for Offices (BCO) NextGen committees, discusses his role in this year's BCO Annual Conference in Milan and the objectives of integrating young professionals into the event for a comprehensive and engaging experience.

Key Aspects of Inclusion and Innovation

Following the success of the 2024 conference in Birmingham led by Pete Crowther, Hall was challenged to replicate the record number of NextGen attendees while crafting an integrated program that caters to the NextGen while also embracing their fresh perspectives in the broader event.

Two major components were introduced to achieve this goal. Firstly, the BCO 2030 seminar and workshop will feature discussions led by NextGen members regarding the potential development of the workplace sector by 2030 and the industry's necessary adaptation. The BCO must also evolve to tackle emerging challenges, a crucial aspect highlighted in this initiative dubbed "The Gallery." This installation showcases the BCO's accomplishments from regional, technical, and awards committees over the past year, placed prominently at the conference's heart.

Goals for the Milan Conference

At the Milan event, attendees will gain a better understanding of the nuances and dynamics of the Italian office sector, particularly in Milan, emphasizing the significance of brand, quality, and identity within the market. Hall encourages participation from both members and non-members to share their visions for the BCO and its evolution amidst current economic challenges. Insights from the attendees will provide invaluable guidance to navigate this complex economic landscape.

Unique BCO Conference Experience

Unlike other high-profile gatherings in the industry calendar, the BCO conference offers a distinctive study trip experience. Rather than focusing solely on the agenda, the event encourages immersion in Milan and learning from the city's achievements, ensuring a well-rounded exploration that goes beyond the office market in London.

Other Current Projects

Aside from his role with the BCO, Hall is working on a life sciences project in Cambridge with Brookgate, a major office development in Westminster, and serving as the Masterplan Design Guardian for ECF on the Crescent Salford Masterplan at Make. He is also dedicated to enhancing sustainability efforts, driving research and innovation, and championing the BCorp agenda at Make.

Highlights of the 2025 Program

Among the event's highlights, Hall specifically looks forward to the "Meet the Contractors" session, which promises to be an insightful state-of-the-nation discussion. Building tours, including the Milano Innovation District (MIND), also attract his interest as they offer valuable opportunities to learn from Milan's impressive developments, including Porta Nuova and CityLife.

The Milan Selection

Milan was chosen for the conference due to its growth in workplace innovation driven by technology, finance, and professional services. The city's ability to retain a distinctive identity through various development schemes makes it an ideal location to explore and learn from.

Driving Force Behind the Wake-Up Call

Hall's motivation each morning includes his dog, as well as the thrill of getting projects off the ground. Significant milestones, such as funding, planning, and contracts, bring him immense satisfaction. Yet, uncertainties, including economic instability, climate change, and project outcomes, occasionally cause sleepless nights. However, Hall's dedicated team provides comfort and stability during challenging times, serving as a solid support system.
