India's First: Navi Mumbai Airport Offers Water Taxis, Eases Congestion

India is set to revolutionise airport connectivity with the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which will be the first to offer water taxi services alongside traditional transport modes. The airport, costing an estimated $2.2 billion, is expected to commence operations in December 2025, providing much-needed relief to the bustling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, a joint venture between the GVK Group and other stakeholders, is poised to become a game-changer in India's aviation landscape. The country has significantly expanded its airport infrastructure, growing from 74 airports in 2014 to 160 in 2025. This includes Mumbai, which will now have a second international airport, making it the only metropolitan area in India with this distinction.

The airport, built by the Adani Group, is designed to initially handle up to 20 million passengers annually. It aims to ease congestion at the existing Mumbai airport, which has been operating beyond its capacity for years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new airport on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in India's aviation sector. With India being the world's third-largest air transport market, this new airport is expected to further boost the country's aviation industry.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, with its unique water taxi connectivity and increased capacity, is set to transform air travel in Mumbai and the surrounding regions. As India's aviation sector continues to grow, this new airport is a testament to the country's commitment to modernising and expanding its infrastructure.
