Balcony power plants, or officially, plug-in solar devices, are compact solar installations, often mounted on balconies but not confined to them. Interestingly, they can generate up to 800 watts of power when the sun is shining, which them laws of electricity supply from external providers. The savings make them an appealing investment. Data from comparison portal Verivox suggests that these mini-solar installations can pay for themselves in 2.5 to 5 years with optimal conditions.

Installing a balcony power plant offers a direct entry point to the energy transition, scores environmental points, and even trims household bills. Collectively, the current installations have a maximum capacity of around 0.9 gigawatts, contributing significantly to our nation's clean energy acceleration.

Breaking Down the Numbers

As of today, the Market Data Register shows 995,583 operational installations. Slightly more than 20,000 are temporarily or permanently shut down. However, the data tends to lag, as our federal agency explains. This is due to the one-month notification deadline and some installations overlooked despite the obligation to report them.

The half-million mark was reached about a year ago, and the one-million mark is within our grasp. According to a survey by Verivox, 9% of respondents already own a balcony power plant, while 17% plan to install one in the future. Around 15% feel cramped for space, and 21% don't find balcony solar installations worthwhile, making up the 45% who currently miss out on all the solar fun. Not everyone, though, turns their back on balcony power plants - 19% have no intention of getting one.

Regulatory Boost for Solar in Germany

The recent surge in balcony power plant installations can be attributed to the simplified requirements made by the former traffic light coalition. Key regulatory changes include easing the process of granting permission for installations from landlords and property owners. Add to that the high electricity prices due to the Ukraine war, and you have the perfect recipe for a solar boom.
