IHCL Takes the Initiative in Energy Efficiency Advancements

In celebration of National Energy Conservation Day, Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) pledges its continued dedication to energy preservation and the promotion of energy efficiency.

IHCL'S ENERGY SAVINGS OVER THE YEARS

Between 2008 and 2021, IHCL hotels managed to save approximately 1.2 billion mega joules of energy, equivalent to powering a hefty 656,500 typical households of four people!

Currently, 27 of IHCL's hotels rely on renewable energy, a commitment further enhanced by the company's recent partnership with Tata Power. This collaboration provides energy from Green Source to key hotels in Mumbai, including The Taj Mahal Palace, Taj Lands End, and Taj Wellington Mews. These hotels are projected to derive around 60% of their energy from green sources, while also cutting nearly 22.9 million kg of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

GOING GREEN, REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT

"Energy conservation is an essential aspect of IHCL's business strategy, as it influences both the present and the future. The company's annual renewable energy consumption has seen a significant increase, with many key hotels now powered by wind and solar energy sources," said Mr. Gaurav Pokhariyal, Senior Vice President and Global Head - Human Resources, IHCL.

All IHCL hotels adhere to Sustainability Action Plans and execute Energy Efficiency Programs and initiatives. These establishments undergo independent audits to verify compliance with energy usage and assess the effectiveness of implemented energy efficiency measures across hotel operations.

While IHCL leads the way, the hospitality sector as a whole has taken strides in energy conservation and renewable energy measures. Companies may employ energy-efficient lighting, HVAC systems, and appliances, use solar panels or wind power for on-site electricity generation, and adopt sustainable practices like rainwater harvesting or waste reduction. Furthermore, some hotels engage in carbon offset programs to counterbalance their emissions with investments in projects that reduce greenhouse gases.

In the ever-evolving landscape of hospitality, companies are beginning to adopt net-zero emissions targets, pursuing green building certifications (such as LEED), and engaging stakeholders in promoting sustainable practices throughout their supply chains.

  1. The commitment of IHCL to environmental science extends beyond energy conservation, as they also prioritize finance when it comes to investing in green energy sources and carbon offset programs, aligning with their broader sustainability goals.
  2. The continuous growth of IHCL's environmental-science endeavors is also reflected in the finance sector, as investments in renewable energy and sustainable practices contribute to both environmental preservation and economic development, underlining the company's responsibility to both society and shareholders.
