U.S. Auto Safety Agency Reopens Investigation into Honda and Acura Vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reopened an investigation into more than 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the U.S., following a high volume of engine failure reports in vehicles not covered by a previous investigation.

The reopened investigation is intended to fully assess related safety concerns and evaluate the scope and severity of the potential engine issue more thoroughly. The investigation is not a part of the recall issued in November 2023 for 249,000 vehicles to address a manufacturing defect in the engine crankshaft.

The focus of the reopened investigation is the 3.5-liter V6 engine in the specified Honda and Acura vehicles. The defect could cause the connecting rod bearing to prematurely wear and seize, potentially leading to engine failure. The regulator received 414 reports of the issue in various Honda and Acura vehicles' 3.5-liter V6 engine.

The affected vehicles include the 2018-2020 model year Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2016-2020 Honda Pilot, 2018-2020 Honda Odyssey, and 2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline. The reopened investigation does not involve any new models not previously mentioned.

It's important to note that this reopened investigation does not indicate any new concerns about connecting rod bearing failures. In a previous investigation in 2024, the agency probed 1.4 million Honda vehicles due to reports of serious engine issues. Honda issued a recall in November 2023 for 249,000 vehicles to address a possible manufacturing defect in the engine crankshaft.

The reopened investigation aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue and any potential risks to the safety of the drivers and passengers. The investigation follows the closure of the previous probe and is not the first time Honda vehicles have been under scrutiny for engine issues.

The NHTSA encourages affected vehicle owners to monitor the investigation's progress and to follow any updates or instructions from Honda regarding potential repairs or recalls. The agency will provide regular updates on the investigation's findings as more information becomes available.
