Puy du Fou to Develop Immersive Historical Theme Park in Oxfordshire, UK

Puy du Fou, the renowned French theme park known for its immersive historical storytelling, has proposed a £600 million (€702) development in Oxfordshire, UK. The plans, if approved, could transform the region into a top destination for history and entertainment.

The proposed park, located near Bicester, covers approximately 370 acres and includes four period villages representing different eras of British history, 13 live shows, themed hotels, landscaped gardens, a wooded park, restaurants, a conference centre, and more.

The UK venture of Puy du Fou plans to create a new 50-acre forest in Cherwell, with more than 5km (3.1 miles) of new hedgerows, 40 acres of wildflower meadows, and 20,000 trees. Environmental sustainability is a focus for the proposed park, with the environment at its heart. According to Puy du Fou, everything in the park must be real, built using the crafts and materials of the time period they represent.

The development also includes three themed hotels, designed to offer authentic experiences that transport guests back in time. The park's plans also include new lakes as part of its environmental considerations.

If approved, the park is expected to create around 2,000 direct jobs and support an additional 6,000 positions through hospitality services, suppliers, and other local businesses. The park's development follows the success of its original park in Les Epesses, France, and its expansion in 2021 in Toledo, Spain.

The park's plans have been submitted to Cherwell District Council, with public consultations having taken place in 2024 and 2025. If approved, the park could open in stages starting in 2029. The proposed park is strategically located near major transport links, including the M40 motorway, facilitating access for visitors.

The economic impact on the local area is estimated to be approximately £500 million (€585) annually. The park is expected to welcome 550,000 guests in its first year and up to 1.47 million annually once fully developed.

Strebelle, the project's director, mentioned that extensive consultations, including six in-person events and over 250 individual meetings, have helped to shape the final proposals for the park. The development is designed to operate seasonally from April to October.

If successful, the Puy du Fou theme park in Oxfordshire could become a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and entertainment seekers alike, offering a unique and immersive experience that brings British history to life.
