Historic Wincanton Hotel Set for Redevelopment After Years of Disrepair
A historic hotel in Wincanton, South Somerset, is set for a new lease of life. The derelict White Horse Hotel, empty since 2015, has been given the green light for redevelopment by South Somerset District Council. The grade two-star listed building, dating back to 1655, will be transformed into residential units, with a commercial space also part of the plans.
The hotel, which has fallen into disrepair over the years, will be converted into 13 one and two-bedroom flats. Wincanton Creative Ltd will acquire and renovate the historic building, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The redevelopment comes after the local authority committed £2m towards Wincanton's regeneration in January 2020. However, the original regeneration programme was scaled back in February 2022, and the redevelopment budget was cut by over £3m following the sale to a private developer.
Parts of the building have posed a risk to the public, with sections falling into the road. The redevelopment will not only restore the hotel but also ensure the safety of the local community.
The White Horse Hotel's redevelopment is set to bring new life to Wincanton. The conversion into flats and the inclusion of a commercial unit will contribute to the town's regeneration. With the local authority's initial commitment and the council's approval, the project is poised to transform a derelict historic building into a safe and vibrant part of the community.
