In the heart of Portugal, two municipalities stand out for their exceptional economic prosperity. According to the latest data, Oeiras and Lisbon have a net income per person exceeding 13,000 euros annually, with Oeiras being the only municipality surpassing 15,000 euros per year, specifically at about 15,862 euros[1].

The Lisbon Metropolitan Area, which includes Oeiras, emerges as the wealthiest region in Portugal, with these municipalities topping the income list[1]. Other regions tend to have average or lower net incomes per person, with no mention of other municipalities exceeding the 13,000-euro threshold in the available data[1].

The average monthly salary in Portugal is about 1,200 euros, which corresponds to roughly 14,400 euros annually. However, Lisbon and surrounding areas earn significantly more[2][5]. This income disparity reflects the economic development and concentration of well-paid jobs around the capital[1][3].

Oeiras, located in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, and Lisbon itself, boast notably higher income levels compared to other regions in Portugal. Other municipalities and regions do not appear to reach this income level based on the sources reviewed.

Lisbon's status as the main economic hub of Portugal contributes to the highest salaries nationally[1][3]. Other regions like Porto and Braga have lower costs of living and salaries on average but weren't cited as exceeding 13,000 euros net income per person annually.

Interestingly, the municipality on the island of Porto Santo, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, has a median net income of 13,089 euros per year. Half of the Azores have municipalities with a median net income above the national average. The West and Tagus Valley have a dozen municipalities each with a median net income above the national average.

Coimbra, known for its university, has a median net income of 13,241 euros per year. The North region registers fewer municipalities above the national average than those concentrated solely in Greater Lisbon. The highest median values in the Porto Metropolitan Area are in Maia (€12,726), Porto (€12,460), and Matosinhos (€12,266).

Cascais, a coastal municipality near Lisbon, has a median net income of 13,406 euros per year. Faro is the only municipality in the Algarve with a median net income above the national average. Évora only makes it into this ranking by three euros, with a median net income of 13,086 euros per year, making it the last municipality on the list earning above 13,000 euros.

Madeira has three municipalities with a median net income above the national average. The Center region has 17 municipalities with a median net income above the national average. Alcochete has a median net income of 13,654 euros per year.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) has released data showing seven municipalities with a net income per person exceeding 13,000 euros per year. Among these, Lisbon residents have a median income of 14,282 euros per year, 10% below the leader, Oeiras.

This wealth disparity between regions underscores the economic significance of Portugal's capital and its surrounding areas. As the economic hub, Lisbon offers the highest salaries nationally, while other regions like Porto and Braga have lower costs of living and salaries on average.

  1. Although the Algarve is a popular tourist destination, the municipality of Faro is the only one in the region that has a median net income above the national average, echoing the economic prosperity found primarily in Lisbon and its surrounding areas.
  2. Beyond personal finance, the concentration of well-paid jobs and economic development around Lisbon contributes to the emergence of Oeiras, a municipality within the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, as the wealthiest region in Portugal, with a net income per person exceeding 15,000 euros annually.
