The upcoming Transcontinental Chief by AmeriStarRail promises to revolutionise travel across the United States, offering a comfortable and efficient journey from New York City to Los Angeles.

Starting its journey from Hoboken Terminal in New Jersey, the Transcontinental Chief is set to serve the New York City area effectively, before making its way westward. The train's final destination is Union Station in Los Angeles, California.

The main stops along this route include the New York area, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cleveland, Ohio, Chicago, Illinois, Kansas City, Missouri, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. This route generally follows and takes over the existing Amtrak Southwest Chief and Pennsylvanian lines, linking Southern California and New York while stopping at major cities across the Midwest and East Coast.

The Transcontinental Chief is planned to travel the roughly coast-to-coast journey in under 72 hours, making it a faster, smoother, and more elegant alternative to traditional road travel. The service is set to debut on May 10, 2026, coinciding with the US’s 250th birthday and the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted partially by Los Angeles.

In addition to passenger travel, the Transcontinental Chief will carry truck drivers with their tractor-trailers, functioning as a "rolling rest stop for truckers" to mitigate truck parking shortages. The project is privately funded and aims to bring about a new profitable era of rail travel in partnership with Amtrak.

However, operational issues at Penn Station prevent the long-distance train from using Amtrak's double-decker Superliner cars in Manhattan. The journey on the Transcontinental Chief will pass through 54 cities, but the 8 key stops highlighted capture the principal urban centres along the corridor.

According to Newsweek, Scott Spencer, the COO of AmeriStarRail, plans to create a profitable golden age of rail travel. This summer, there will be a beautiful Amtrak route through New York that could be the most scenic in the USA, especially in the fall. Passengers can board the Transcontinental Chief in Hoboken, New Jersey, marking the beginning of a new chapter in American rail travel.

  1. Passengers traveling on the Transcontinental Chief may experience fewer health issues due to reduced travel time, as the train is planned to complete the coast-to-coast journey in under 72 hours, potentially minimizing the duration of travel-related stress and fevers.
  2. In the realm of transportation and finance, the Transcontinental Chief project, a collaboration between AmeriStarRail and Amtrak, aims to transform the industry by bringing a new profitable era of rail travel and likely boosting the economy through increased productivity, such as the transport of truck drivers and their tractor-trailers, ultimately benefiting various sectors of the economy.
