Berlin's Tiergarten Tunnel Reopens to All Vehicles After Repairs

After a closure of more than half a year, Berlin's Tiergarten Tunnel has reopened to all vehicles, including heavy ones, in mid-July 2025. The closure was due to the need for repairs to the jet fans in the southbound direction of the tunnel.

The Tiergarten Tunnel, situated in the direction of Kreuzberg, is part of the Tiergarten Spreebogen (TTS) tunnel system. The closure affected the southbound direction of the tunnel, which was previously closed to vehicles over 3.5 tons.

The repairs were necessary as several fans in the southbound direction had to be dismantled due to excessive vibration values and material damage. The repaired fans are now capable of adequately venting smoke in case of an emergency, such as a truck fire.

The operational safety of the Tiergarten Spreebogen (TTS) tunnel system is now ensured in both directions. The announcement was made by the Senate Department for Transport, and the temporary metal signage blocking the southbound direction of the Tiergarten Tunnel has been removed.

Smaller vehicles have been able to pass through the Tiergarten Tunnel since early December, but the reopening to heavy vehicles marks a significant milestone. The repaired jet fans in the southbound direction of the Tiergarten Tunnel have been successfully commissioned.

The closure of the Tiergarten Tunnel was due to problems with the ventilation systems. The Tiergarten Tunnel, being part of the TTS tunnel system, plays a crucial role in Berlin's transportation network. Its reopening will undoubtedly ease the commute for many residents and visitors.

[1] To ensure a safer and smoother commute for Berlin residents and visitors, the Senate Department for Transport has announced the final reopening of the Tiergarten Tunnel. This reconstruction project, which included extensive vocational training for engineers and technicians in fan repair and maintenance, has resulted in the installation of improved ventilation systems.

[2] As part of this effort, Berlin's community policy for infrastructure development now includes a dedicated funding segment for vocational training programs enabling the workforce to adapt to the evolving needs of the industry, particularly in the automotive sector. This commitment to continuous learning is expected to positively impact the financial stability of local businesses that rely on the efficient transportation network, such as those in the vocational training field and the automotive industry.
