Happening at the epicenter of intense roadblock.
Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced the commencement of an extensive bus replacement service between Hamburg and Berlin, following the closure of the Hamburg–Berlin railway line for a comprehensive nine-month renovation starting on August 1, 2025.
The closure of the 278-kilometer line, which affects not only long-distance traffic but also numerous regional connections, including the route between Hamburg and Rostock, is necessitated by a series of modernization projects to improve the reliability and capacity of Germany’s busiest north-south route.
Over 180 kilometers of track are being renewed, with about 200 switches replaced. The modernization also includes the installation of new signaling and interlocking systems, the construction of six new grade-separated junctions, the upgrade of 28 stations and traffic control centers, and the bundling of construction work at around 130 sites along the route and adjacent branch lines.
To compensate for the full closure of the railway line, DB is operating an extensive bus replacement service with over 170 buses deployed daily on 27–28 replacement bus routes. This service, operated by ecoVista among other partners, is designed to cover local and regional connections broken by the rail closure, providing alternatives for affected passengers.
The buses, built by the manufacturers SOR and Iveco, can accommodate up to 120 people. They are equipped with Wi-Fi, USB outlets, and in some cases, toilets. Deutsche Bahn has also equipped the buses with an electronic display of the route and connections, automatic, acoustic stop announcements, and optical stop announcements in the vehicle interior.
Bicycles are not allowed on the buses replacing train traffic between Hamburg and Berlin. However, real-time travel updates and departure boards are accessible through DB’s apps and websites. Long-distance trains are rerouted, ensuring continued travel between Hamburg and Berlin, albeit with longer journey times.
This major infrastructure investment aims to restore reliability and stability to Germany’s busiest north-south route and support long-term rail traffic capacity and safety improvements. The bus service from ecoVista is a critical component in maintaining passenger mobility during this extensive upgrade.
