Hamburg's New Initiative Helps Low-Income Households Slash Electricity Costs

Hamburg is launching a new initiative to help low-income households reduce their electricity costs. Starting in October, the city will promote the installation of plug-in solar devices, with up to 90% of the costs covered for eligible households.

The 'Balcony Power Plant - Promotion for Households with Low Income' program is a collaboration between BUKEA and Caritas. It aims to support households receiving certain benefits or with low income.

The promotion will run until July 31, 2027, with a total of around 580,000 euros available. Interested parties can apply through Caritas, which also offers balcony inspections and landlord communication support. Senator Katharina Fegebank stated that the program combines social justice with climate protection and energy efficiency.

Households can save up to 500 euros on photovoltaic balcony modules and reduce their long-term electricity costs. The program covers up to 90% of the costs for photovoltaic systems up to 800 watts.

The 'Balcony Power Plant' program is set to benefit many low-income households in Hamburg. By promoting the use of solar devices, the city aims to make a positive impact on both the environment and the financial situation of its residents.
