Grocery store, Lucky, set to shutter in San Francisco's Bayview District, three years following its initial opening

In a surprise turn of events, the Kroger grocery store on 3rd Street in the Bayview Hunters Point area has announced its closure, scheduled for November 1. The news has caught many customers and city leaders off guard, including District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton, who only heard about the closure this week.

Supervisor Walton is working to put a pause on the closure, expressing concern about the impact it will have on the community. Anthony Davenport, a long-time resident of the area who has worked at Kroger for 34 years, shares this concern. Davenport utilizes the Kroger grocery store almost daily for his lunch and dinner needs.

SaveMart, the parent company of Kroger, confirmed the closure, but no reason for the decision was given. Davenport feels that Kroger was never fully invested in the Bayview District location, citing minimal staff as a common issue.

The Bayview District, including the Kroger grocery store location, was officially designated as a low-income, low-access food area (food desert) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2019. The closure of Kroger grocery store adds to the food desert issue in the area, and the city and county may need to get creative to bring a long-lasting solution.

Davenport suggested the possibility of a nonprofit grocery store to serve the community, expressing hope for a return of a 'real Safeway' or 'real Kroger' grocery store to the community. Employees of Kroger grocery store will be offered positions at nearby locations based on seniority and availability.

As of now, the search results do not provide the name of the person advocating for keeping the Kroger Markets in Bayview District or negotiating with Save Mart. The Kroger grocery store opened in October 2022, replacing Walgreens in the same location. The community remains hopeful for a solution that ensures access to affordable and quality food options.
