Green Roofs Transform Garages into Lush Oases in Emscher-Lippe Region
A property owners' cooperative has transformed garage roofs into lush green spaces, thanks to a grant from the '10,000 Green Roofs' program. The project, which covers over 200 square meters, has not only enhanced the area's appearance but also offers significant benefits for climate adaptation and biodiversity.
The cooperative received a subsidy of up to 50 euros per square meter of greened roof area, with a maximum of 200 square meters per property. The green roofs help keep buildings cooler during hot summers and provide food for insects. They also store rainwater and prevent flooding from heavy rain. Interested parties can apply for the green roof subsidy at any time through the funding portal on the Klima.Werk website. The '10,000 Green Roofs' program aims to green up to 10,000 roofs in the Emscher-Lippe region, contributing to local cooling through evaporation.
The Emschergenossenschaft/Lippeverband subsidized the green roof project with 10,000 euros. The cooperative's initiative demonstrates the potential of green roofs in mitigating urban heat island effects and promoting biodiversity. With ongoing applications accepted, more properties could soon benefit from this innovative approach to sustainable urban development.
