Greece's New Traffic Law: Severe Fines, License Suspension for Tourists
Greece has introduced a new traffic law, effective September 13, 2025, with severe fines and strict enforcement. Tourists, especially those driving rental vehicles, should be aware of the strict rules to avoid costly offenses and license suspension.
The new law imposes immediate license suspension for serious offenses, with reinstatement requiring fine payment and potentially weeks of suspension. Not wearing a helmet or seatbelt can lead to high fines up to 2,000 euros for repeat offenses. Wild camping and parking campers in prohibited areas can incur fines up to 3,000 euros. Using a phone while driving can result in fines up to 2,000 euros and license suspension up to one year.
Illegal parking can result in fines between 20 and 150 euros, with vehicle immobilization for days. Exceeding the 30 km/h speed limit in residential areas by more than 20 km/h can result in fines of at least 100 euros. Drunk driving can lead to fines of 350 euros and license suspension from 0.5% BAC, with potential jail time for higher levels. Even minor offenses can have significant consequences, including loss of mobility and time.
German tourists whose driver's licenses are suspended must deal with Greek traffic authorities. They may need to pay fines or fulfill specific legal requirements in Greece to regain their license, which might involve a period of suspension (up to 10 years for serious offenses). Consulting the German consulates in Greece is advisable.
Greece's new traffic law brings severe penalties for various offenses. Tourists should familiarize themselves with the rules to avoid costly fines and license suspension. Ignoring these rules can lead to significant inconvenience and potential loss of mobility.
