India Hosts Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet, Bolsters Global Position in Fish Production

India, a longstanding and committed member of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) since its inception in 1957, recently took another significant step in its agricultural and aquatic sectors. On June 13, 2025, the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, and the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) organised the Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet 2025 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh [1].

Although the detailed agenda and key highlights of the meeting are not explicitly listed in the available search results, it is likely that the gathering focused on promoting development and advancements in inland fisheries and aquaculture in India. This assumption is supported by the organising bodies and the context of India's growing position in fish production globally [1][2].

India's second place ranking in global fish production, after China, is attributed to initiatives such as the Blue Revolution, PM Matsya Sampada Yojana, Kisan Credit Card for Fishers, Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund, and Organic Fisheries Cluster schemes [2]. These programs reflect priority areas that were likely discussed or emphasized during the meet.

The Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet 2025 is part of ongoing efforts under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying to boost sustainable inland fisheries and aquaculture, which have been expanding owing to scientific breakthroughs and government support [4].

Meanwhile, India's role in the marine navigation sector was also highlighted, as the country served as the Vice President of the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) during the 2nd Session of the IALA Council held in Nice, France [3]. The Indian delegation was led by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterway.

On the domestic front, the Lokpal, a statutory body established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act 2013, played a crucial role in superintending over and giving direction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Lokpal, which has jurisdiction to inquire into allegations of corruption against certain public functionaries and for related matters, has adopted a new motto: "Empower Citizens, Expose Corruption" [5].

The Lokpal of India consists of a chairperson, eight Members, and four Judicial Members, who are appointed by the President of India on the recommendation of a selection committee [6]. The Chairperson and the Members of the Lokpal are tasked with investigating allegations of corruption and misconduct in public life.

In a forward-looking move, India extended a formal invitation to all member states to attend the 3rd IALA General Assembly in December 2025 and the 21st IALA Conference in 2027, both to be held in Mumbai [7]. This invitation underscores India's commitment to global cooperation in marine navigation and its eagerness to share its knowledge and expertise with the international community.

In conclusion, the Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture Meet 2025 and India's role in the IALA Council signify the country's ongoing efforts to drive advancements in various sectors, from agriculture and fisheries to marine navigation. The Lokpal's role in combating corruption further underscores India's commitment to transparency and accountability in public life.

  1. India's efforts to drive advancements extend beyond marine navigation and fishing sectors, as it actively engages in policy-making for various industries such as science, finance, and transportation, given its role as the Vice President of the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA).
  2. As India's primary focus lies on sustainability in inland fisheries and aquaculture, enhancing environmental practices in these sectors is crucial for maintaining a balance, considering the broader implications for the economy and the overall state of the environment.
  3. In an effort to strengthen international relations and promote global cooperation, India has invited all member states to attend the 3rd IALA General Assembly and the 21st IALA Conference, showcasing its commitment to knowledge-sharing and expertise in the context of a rapidly developing polity.
  4. The Lokpal’s anti-corruption efforts in public life underscore India's dedication to upholding transparency and accountability, not only within the governmental sector but also across other areas, including finance, industry, and science, as these sectors play a significant role in shaping the nation's future.
