Government reports indicate that over 250 lakh tonnes of wheat have been procured, with more than 21 lakh farmers receiving a combined sum of Rs 62,155 crore.

The Department of Food and Public Distribution has announced that the country has surpassed the estimated target of 312 LMT for wheat procurement in the current Rabi Marketing Season 2025-26. The procurement of wheat has surpassed last year's figure for the same date by 24.78%.

The success of the wheat procurement process is attributed to the quick and efficient measures taken by the Department of Food and Public Distribution. Strategic decisions like imposing stockholding limits via the wheat stock portal and granting timely relaxations on FAQ norms were made to maintain the pace of procurement. Quick MSP payments, often processed within 24 to 48 hours, were ensured.

State-specific action plans, early farmer awareness campaigns, timely registration, and proper functioning of procurement centers were implemented. Punjab has procured the most wheat (103.89 LMT), followed by Madhya Pradesh (67.57 LMT), Haryana (65.67 LMT), Rajasthan (11.44 LMT), and Uttar Pradesh (7.55 LMT).

The mandatory weekly disclosure of wheat stock started from April 1 to curb hoarding and stabilize prices. In February 2025, stock limits for traders were reduced from 1,000 metric tons to 250 metric tons until March 31.

However, no new information about the total amount of wheat procured or the MSP payment to farmers was provided in this announcement. Additionally, the region with the highest volume of barley harvested by April 30, 2026, for the 2025-26 Rabi marketing season program is not specified in the available data.

Officials conducted regular reviews and field visits to address challenges on the ground and ensure smooth operations. Proactive measures for successful wheat procurement were implemented, but no new details about these measures were disclosed.

The country is expected to exceed the estimated target of 312 LMT by a considerable margin in the remaining RMS 2025-26 season. Despite the lack of specific details, the success of the wheat procurement process so far is a promising sign for India's food security.
