Government grants initial debt alleviation for 411 individuals during the third nationwide debt relief program
In a significant humanitarian stride, Kuwait's third national debt settlement campaign has provided relief to more than 9,000 financially distressed citizens, raising over KD 15 million as of mid-June 2025. This campaign, part of an ongoing commitment to provide aid, targets indebted individuals, particularly those detained in correctional institutions or those with enforcement cases.
The initiative, driven by a humanitarian vision and governed by strict standards of transparency and justice, has been meticulously planned and executed. Six technical and legal committees, comprising representatives from the Ministries of Interior, Justice, Social Affairs, Endowments, and Islamic Affairs, as well as the Zakat House, have carefully examined 9,119 files to ensure fairness and prevent exploitation.
Dr. Khaled Al-Ajmi, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Chairman of the Debtors Committee, announced the approval of the first installment of debt settlements for Kuwaiti citizens whose debts do not exceed 5,000 dinars. He emphasised that this achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of these committees.
The committees have reviewed and approved cases based on specific criteria: applicants must be Kuwaiti nationals, must not have benefited from the 2023 or 2024 debt campaigns, the debt must be due for enforcement, and there must be an existing execution file.
The campaign is a joint initiative involving the government and several charitable and financial entities, such as Zakat House, Kuwait Finance House, Issa Abdullah Al-Othman Endowment, the Secretariat General of Awqaf, and various charitable and cooperative societies. This partnership reflects Kuwait’s humanitarian approach and national solidarity.
As of early July 2025, the government has approved the first phase of debt relief for 411 citizens under this campaign, continuing the rollout of assistance to eligible individuals. Citizens can follow up on their applications and inquiries through the Sahel application, which provides transparent communication and electronic access to file details.
The third national campaign is a significant milestone in Kuwait's commitment to humanitarian values, human dignity, and social solidarity. The committee remains committed to ensuring assistance reaches those most in need, with preparations underway to review the files of a second group of citizens whose debts do not exceed 10,000 dinars, followed by a third phase targeting individuals with debts up to 15,000 dinars.
Personal-finance management is crucial for individuals approved for debt relief during Kuwait's third national campaign, as they aim to maintain financial stability moving forward. This campaign, despite focusing on settling debts, also encourages education on personal-finance matters through partnerships with financial entities like Kuwait Finance House.
