The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced that the 2021 WTTC Global Summit will be held in Cancun, Mexico, from March 23-25. The event, which is the most influential gathering in the Travel & Tourism calendar, aims to establish international cooperation and coordination, public/private partnership, and restore public confidence in travel.

The summit will take place at The Moon Palace Convention Centre, with the Government of Quintana Roo partnering with WTTC to host the event. Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, Governor of Quintana Roo, has confirmed the implementation of enhanced safety and hygiene protocols for the summit. World-leading hygiene and safety protocols will be in place throughout the event.

The Palace Resorts Group, which has maintained the highest standards of hygiene and security since the beginning of the pandemic, has expressed gratitude for being chosen to host the event at The Moon Palace. The group has also been awarded the WTTC Safe Travels stamp, a global stamp of approval for safety.

Previous Global Summits have attracted high-profile international speakers such as Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, David Cameron, and José Manuel Barroso. This year's summit will also feature a variety of speakers, with details to be announced in due course.

In response to the ongoing pandemic, the summit will be held in a hybrid format, with both physical and virtual attendance options. Up to 20,000 online free registrations will be available for virtual attendance. Extensive outdoor sessions will also be included to ensure physical distancing.

Cancun Airport currently operates more than 300 daily flights and maintains an R rate below one, providing a safe travel environment for attendees.

WTTC has been at the forefront of international efforts to save the Travel & Tourism sector, which contributes 10.3% to global GDP and is responsible for one in ten jobs. The organisation recently offered to collaborate with the new incoming US administration to recover international travel.

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, emphasises the importance of adhering to the world's best available health and hygiene protocols at the 2020 Global Summit. The summit will announce major new initiatives for 2021, with a focus on learning from pandemic challenges and showcasing adaptations for COVID-19 recovery in the Travel & Tourism sector.

The 20th WTTC Global Summit is not being led by the current governor of Quintana Roo, likely due to event organisation by other authorities or international entities. Nevertheless, the Government of Quintana Roo is committed to ensuring a successful and safe event for all attendees.
